Reticulate evolution and biogeography in ferns and lycophytes - a colloquium honoring Dr. David Barrington Fawcett, Susan [1], Barrington, David [2], Sundue, Michael A [3], Burleigh, Gordon [4], Sessa, Emily [5], GoFlag, consortium [4], Kuo, Li Yaung [6], Smith, Alan [7]. 600-species phylogenomic dataset provides insights into historical global biogeography of the Thelypteridaceae, with special reference to Hawaiian and African taxa. The Thelypteridaceae, numbering ca. 1000 species, is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex of all fern families. Phylogenomic sequence data representing ca. 400 nuclear loci generated as part of the Genealogy of Flagellate Plants (GoFlag) Project yield a phylogeny that nearly triples taxon sampling from previous molecular studies of the family and represents more than half of known species diversity. Results are especially enlightening for taxonomically problematic Malesian, Polynesian, and African clades. Although these new data support many recognized genera, some are evidently not monophyletic, necessitating generic recircumscriptions, elevation in rank of infrageneric taxa, or new names for previously unrecognized groups. We propose hypotheses for the relative roles of historical processes such as dispersal and diversification in contributing to biogeographic patterns. Finally, we provide new and somewhat surprising results on the relationships among African Thelypteridaceae, and novel insights on the affinities of Hawaiian taxa in the family.
