Pteridology Mendez-Reneau, Jonas [1], Haufler, Christopher [2], Sigel, Erin [3]. Cryptic Diversity in Polypodium vulgare Across North Temperate Eurasia. Polypodium vulgare is the type species of Polypodium and, by extension, the type for the largest fern family, Polypodiaceae, as well as the namesake of perhaps the best-studied fern reticulation complex. Once considered a single, morphologically variable circum-temperate species, the P. vulgare complex has been partitioned into 16 species, with the name P. vulgare currently intended for the allotetraploid taxon derived from two primarily North American diploid species, P. glycyrrhiza and P. sibiricum. Polypodium vulgare sensu stricto is thought to have a broad north temperate Eurasian geographic distribution, though its exact range in Asia is unclear. Few Asian specimens have been included in previous molecular analyses of the group, and the potential for additional cryptic diversity within P. vulgare is largely unexplored. Using phylogenetic analyses of plastid and nuclear markers and expanded sampling, we present evidence of independent origins for collections labeled P. vulgare across Europe and Asia, with P. glycyrrhiza as the maternal progenitor for European P. vulgare and P. sibiricum as the maternal progenitor for Asian collections. We confirm the presence of the provisionally named P. "okiense", an allotetraploid derived from P. sibiricum and the Asian diploid P. fauriei, in Japan. Additionally, we report preliminary evidence for a new allopolyploid from the Korean peninsula, derived from P. sibiricum and an unknown taxon closely allied to P. fauriei. This work provides an updated framework for reassessing the morphological variation, historical and biogeographic patterns of reticulation, and taxonomy of the iconic P. vulgare complex in Asia.
