Paleobotany Manchester, Steven [1], Basinger, James [2], Liu, Christopher Yusheng [3]. Tough nuts to crack: Fruits of Juglans from the Eocene and Miocene of Arctic Canada. Three new fossil species of Juglans L. (Juglandaceae), are recognized on the basis of nuts recovered from the Middle Eocene fossil forests of Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago. They represent the most northerly occurrences for the genus and are among the oldest known records of Juglans section Cardiocaryon (butternuts). By their relatively smooth surface texture and smaller size, they contrast with butternuts previously recognized from the Miocene of Banks Island, Canada and Washington, USA. All of these taxa have been investigated by micro-CT scan along with traditional methods to reveal their internal as well as external morphology, providing a good basis for comparison with other fossil and extant species.
