Address of the BSA President-Elect - Linda Watson Watson, Linda [1]. Is Graduate Education Keeping Pace with the Dynamic Nature of 21stCentury STEM Careers? Most STEM doctoral students aspire to become college professors, and faculty do a fantastic job of training and preparing these bright and hard-working individuals for successful careers in academia. Yet many of today’s graduates will not land a permanent faculty position due to the limited academic job market, pushing the profession out of reach for many. Fortunately, the trend in STEM careers is on an upward trajectory, which provides a positive outlook for a robust job market for botanists in industry, government, and non-profit sectors. Graduate education remains the gold standard for the requisite advanced training needed in these careers, and high levels of literacy and specialized skillsets continue to be critical. Yet mentors often lack a non-academic background, often leaving students on their own to figure out what knowledge and skills are essential for alternative professions. It is becoming more and more critical that higher education and professional organizations play an active role in guiding students as they navigate a dynamic and expanding landscape of careers.
