Why does geographic range size explain diversification rates variation amongst land plants?

Geographic range size has been the only trait showing a significant correlation and important contribution to explaining the variation in diversification rates observed amongst plant lineages, regardless of the taxonomic rank or group. However, studies analyzing geographic ranges at a macroevolutionary scale have relied on broad and likely inaccurate proxies to the geographic range size (e.g., number of ecozones where members of a family occur). Another problem is that they only consider the outermost limits of occurrence of a taxon (i.e., the Extent of Occurrence, EOO). The actual range of taxa (i.e., Area of Occupancy, AOO) can be smaller given the discontinuities that can exist within the EOO. Available studies have also ignored the variation that can exist among species within the higher taxa studied. Here we aim to more accurately characterize both the AOO and EOO and the variation within them, as well as to reassess the relationship with diversification rates. We used revised and curated databases built from public datasets, and explore and compare available proposed methods in several families: Minimum Spanning Tree (MST), Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP), Alpha shape Hull (ASH), Latitudinal range (LatRg), Longitudinal range (LonRg), Cell counts (CT). Our results will provide information to better understand the relationship of geographic range size and geographic modes of speciation with diversification rates.
