Impact of spatial distribution of a population on plant morphology and pollination dynamics of Nymphaea odorata.

Location and morphology impact the reproductive success of a plant. In this study, we examine the role of morphology, spatial distribution within a population, and pollination system on the reproductive success of Missouri native wetland plant, Nymphaea odorata. Pollinator observations, morphology and hand pollination experiments were conducted. Our results found the main pollinator was Halictidae which has higher visitation rates to the interior plants in the population. Nectar concentration is higher in pink flowers. N. odorata is not self-compatible and not pollen limited. This study highlights the importance of pollination services for this species. Further study is needed on the impact of surrounding habitat on the pollination systems.
