Vascular Plants of the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation (ACNC) Zachery Berry, School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe AZ
The Arizona Center for Nature Conservation (ACNC; Phoenix Zoo) is a 125-acre, AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited, privately owned, non-profit zoo located within Papago Park in Phoenix, Arizona. As a former man-made fish hatchery, situated just north of Tempe Town Lake, it is now a heavily trafficked desert oasis attracting 1.3 million visitors a year. The ACNC park contains multiple small lakes and creek systems which provide habitat for many organisms including riparian and wetland plants, such as Cyperus, Cephalanthus, Pluchea, Anemopsis and the endangered Huachuca water umbel (Liliaeopsis schaffneriana). Many cultivated taxa include non-native genera such as those planted on purpose or unintentionally around houses and municipalities across Maricopa County. This project is to establish a composite taxa list for ACNC institutional use in horticultural/veterinary implementation and botanical education and outreach.
